An Interpretation of Reality
installation, sculptures, audio, reinforced concrete, 4-channel audio piece, tools, archive
Feb '25, solo show, thesis presentation at K-Strich Bremen
An Interpretation of Reality is a multimedia exploration of how reality and opinion are shaped by fragmented, subjective interpretation, examining the dissonance between distant war events and personal reality. The artwork reconstructs war torn concrete structures based on archival war photography, emphasising the distortion and abstraction inherent in perception. These handcrafted pieces deviate from their real world counterparts due to lack of information, personal interpretation and material constraints reflecting how media saturation and physical and emotional distance affect our understanding of crises.
Through sculptural reconstructions and immersive sound compositions, the work explores the distortions that occur in the process of perception and interpretation. The sound is generated from recordings of the sculpting process hammering, chiselling and breaking concrete which are then processed through analogue and digital feedback loops. These manipulated sounds transform the rigid blocks into an evolving, chaotic soundscape, reflecting the instability of truth and the fluid nature of perception. The interplay between the solid, seemingly permanent forms and the ever changing sonic composition underscores the difficulty of grasping objective reality in an age of overwhelming information.
By translating destruction into a tangible and auditory form, An Interpretation of Reality highlights the limits of knowledge and the complexities of forming an informed perspective. It invites viewers to reflect on their own role in shaping narratives, questioning how our understanding is constructed and to what extent it can ever be complete. In doing so, the work becomes a meditation on the constant search for clarity in the midst of uncertainty.
